Omuroyama is a volcano located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The altitude is 580m. Mt. Omuro is a symbolic mountain of Ito City, designated as a national natural monument and part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
❶When was Mt. Omuro formed?
Omuroyama is a mountain that was created by an eruption about 4000 years ago. Omuroyama is characterized by scoria cones made of rough, bubbly masses of lava and volcanic debris. In addition, a large amount of lava flowed from the foot of Mt. Omuro, and some of it flowed into the sea, forming the Jogasaki Coast.
❷“Obachi Tour” with a 360 degree view‼︎
Our recommendation at Mt. Omuro is the “Obachi Tour,” which offers a spectacular 360-degree view. Ohachi Meguri is a mountaintop tour that goes around the walking path built around the crater ruins of Mt. Omuro. You can walk around the crater ruins, which are 300m in diameter and 70m deep, recessed like a mortar, along a course that is approximately 1km in length.
The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes. It takes only 6 minutes to ride the lift to the top of the mountain, and from there you can walk around the promenade around the crater rim. The view from the top of the mountain is good and there are no obstructions. Therefore, if the weather is clear, you can enjoy a spectacular 360-degree view of Mt. Fuji, the Izu Islands, Sagami Bay, the Amagi Mountain Range, and more.

Sengen Shrine is a shrine located on the east side of the crater of Mt. Omuro in Ito City. The unique feature is that there is a shrine inside the crater. Omuroyama Sengen Shrine was built in 1654 by Matsudaira Izumokami. You can go down the steep stairs right near the summit lift station. The blessings of Omuroyama Sengen Shrine are “easy childbirth” and “matchmaking.”

Gochinyorai are five life-sized stone statues that are enshrined at the old trailhead to the west of the top of Mt. Omuro in Ito City.

The reason why Gochinyorai is enshrined on Mt. Omuro is because during the Edo period, people who received blessings for the safe delivery of their daughters would dedicate Jizo statues as a token of gratitude. It was dedicated around 1663 to a man named Asakura Seibei, a master fisherman who lived in Soshu Iwamura, Ashigarashimo, Kanagawa Prefecture. When Asakura Seibei’s daughter became pregnant at the age of 9, she prayed for a safe delivery at Sengen Shrine on Mt. Omuro, and since she had a safe delivery, it was dedicated to this place.
④HachikaiWhat is Jizo?
Hachikai Jizo are eight Jizo statues that are enshrined at the top of Mt. Omuro in Ito City.
The reason this Jizo statue was dedicated to the summit of Mt. Omuro is because fishermen from the nearby coast prayed for safety at sea, prevention of maritime accidents, and good catches. It is also said that when he went fishing, he used Mt. Omuro as a landmark to determine his fishing grounds. Hachikai Jizo is designated as a natural monument by Ito City.
