Located in the heart of Tochigi Prefecture, Nasushiobara is a nature lover’s paradise with many outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, hot springs and beautiful waterfall views. This time, I took pictures of three scenic waterfalls and Tenguiwa.

“Ryushun Falls” A good hiking course for forest bathing‼︎

Shiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture “Ryushun Waterfall”
About 40 minutes by car fromNasushiobara Station. This waterfall means spring visit waterfall in Japanese.
Long ago, the water dried up for three months in winter, and in spring, a waterfall appeared, hence the name.  (Now the water is always flowing.)

It takes about 10 minutes on foot from the free parking lot to reach the waterfall after crossing a 20-meter long suspension bridge.
The waterfall has a drop of 15m, and although the amount of water is small and lacks impact, it is a delicate and beautiful waterfall.
Cross the suspension bridge and in front of the waterfall, there are tables and chairs where you can spend a relaxing time.
It can be reached in 10 minutes, but the route to the waterfall is steep, so it is better to wear shoes that are easy to walk.

There is a small space in front of the waterfall where you can take a break on a bench or table.

“Mikaeri no Taki” A waterfall that looks back and a beautiful suspension bridge with a length of 100m and a height of 30m…

Shiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture “Mikaeri Waterfall”
It is a long and beautiful waterfall with a height of 53 meters and a width of 3 meters.
About 30 minutes by car from Nasushiobara Station.

“Mikaeri” means to look back in Japanese. It is said that this name came from the fact that travelers would look back at it when they left because of its beauty.

You will arrive at the observatory in about 15 minutes on foot from the free parking lot.

The waterfall is quite far from the observatory and some people may feel a little unsatisfactory, but the road to the waterfall is a 100m long and 30m high suspension bridge, so it will be a satisfying hike.

You can go to Mikaeri Falls and Ryushun Falls on the same hiking course.
(As of February 2023, it was under construction, so it was only possible to go from each parking lot.)

“Ryuuka no Taki” A three-stage waterfall representing Nasu with a height of 60m! !

Shiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture “Ryuka Waterfall”
About 60m high and about 5m wide. It is a beautiful waterfall representative of Shiobara that flows down in three steps. “Ryuka” means transforming into a dragon.
It got its name because it looks like a dragon climbing up into the sky when it flows in three stages.
A promenade is maintained from the free parking lot along the national highway, and the required time is about 20 minutes one way, and you can reach the waterfall relatively safely without too many slopes and dangerous places.

However, when I visited in February, there was no snow on the surrounding roads, but the trail to the falls was snowy and slippery in places. We recommend wearing non-slip shoes that are easy to walk in. I am tired after walking for 20 minutes.

The observation space of the waterfall is surrounded by concrete and you can enjoy the unique atmosphere.

You can also see Hosetsu Falls and Fukyo Falls along the way.

“Tenguiwa” A triangular rock mass with a height of 100m and a width of 50m at the base, which will give you a sense of adventure‼︎

“Tengu Rock” in Shiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture
A triangular rock formation with a height of 100m and a base width of 50m.

Legend has it that long ago, a long-nosed goblin lived in this rock and did evil deeds. There is a well-maintained promenade, and you can reach the top in about 30 minutes from the free parking lot, even if you are resting.

However, even though it was well maintained, the road to the top was quite steep and the rocks were rough and the footing was poor, and there were many dangerous places where you could slide down.

Hiking with small children is not possible. Be prepared with comfortable walking shoes and give it a try.
However, when you reach the top with difficulty, a great view awaits you.
If you look closely at your feet, you can see that people in the past tried their courage and their names were carved on the rock.
Fences are now in place.

“Nodateiwa” A monolith where you can enjoy natural rock climbing.

If you walk along the river from the parking lot, you will find a strangely shaped rock called “Yataiwa”. You can enjoy natural rock climbing here, and you can also photograph Tenguiwa from below.

From adventurous trekking to leisurely hiking while bathing in the forest, and relaxing in hot springs, Nasushiobara City is easily accessible from Tokyo and is full of spots where you can fully enjoy nature.
I would like to create a column by creating photos and videos of these areas in the future.
